Margaret Atwood firing a flame thrower at a copy of The Handmaid's Tale. A copy made of fire-proof materials, obviously.
No, this is not a real-life re-enactment of Bradbury's Farhenheit 451 ...( although I can't be the only one curious as to the temperature of the flame thrower...) but a protest to the senseless book bans that are happening in America. Over a thousand books have been banned, most focus on LGBTQ+ rights, with a large chunk of the banned books containing non-white protagonists.
We can read this and be aghast at this madness, the narrow-mindedness, prejudice and dystopian-style censorship...it's sounding like we are back in the Thatcher era of section 28 (which was not all that long ago, really.) But the banned book clubs that are springing up show us that no matter how foolish and damaging the people are that make these decisions, there will always be people that see through the hate and discrimination.
Not everybody is poisoned.
